About Plaza Independencia, Montevideo

Sandwich - Delicious Ingredient Four

The Plaza Independencia is not just the heart of Montevideo, but a place that resonates with the love in the hearts of millions of people. It is a landmark that is a tribute to General Jose Gervasio Artigas, the national hero, who fought for freedom, finally seizing Uruguay's independence from Spain at the beginning of the 19th century. The central attraction, therefore, is the grand statue of the General atop his horse. Beneath this imposing structure is a mausoleum, safeguarding his ashes. People come here to pay their homage. They also come to marvel at the architectural wonders surrounding this square-shaped plaza, especially Palacio Salvio. The plaza is surrounded by beautiful parks, that are loved for their tall trees, dancing fountains, and lush, green lawns. Local souvenir shops sell mementos, restaurants are available in plenty.
