One of the beautiful Governmental palaces in the world, the Palacio Legislativo, Uruguay's Parliament Building was inaugurated in 1908. It was declared a National Historic Monument in 1975. Carvings, stained glass windows, and ornate sculptures decorate each and every corner of this magnificent building. Several beautiful murals and paintings are also found inside this huge monument shaped in the form of a cross. About 27 colors of marble decorate Palacio Legislativo. It's ornate walls and ceilings leaves spectators spellbound.  The architecture is neo-classical.  A visit to this place is an absolute must to be able to appreciate the past and present of Montevideo.

Tips

  • A tip for photographing the exterior of the building: it faces S - SW so the best lighting is late in the day, i.e. after 5 p.m. in summer.
  • It is convenient to arrive a few minutes in advance.
  • The guided tours are available in English, Spanish and Portuguese.
  • 10:30 a.m. – Guided tours in Spanish and Portuguese.
    14:30 p.m. – Guided tour in Spanish.
    15:00 p.m.– Guided tours in English and Portuguese.
  • The changing of guards takes place every hour, so talk to your tour guide to set the most convenient hour.
  • The huge library offers digital collections and holds virtual exhibitions.
  • Be careful as you step out of the main building, as the traffic outside is fast and chaotic.
  • Ask the guide regarding the places where photography is allowed.
