Busy roads, essential buildings, and numerous people - this is a sight you will witness in Plaza Independencia. And, Estevez Palace sits right in the middle of all this beautiful chaos, in the heart of Montevideo. It’s squared centrepiece, a 30-ton bronze statue of Jose Artigas stands proudly in the heart of the city. It separates Ciudad Vieja from Montevideo with the Gateway of the Citadel on one of the sides and the beginning of 18 de Julio avenue on the other. Out of the essential buildings in Plaza Independencia, Estevez Palace is one such majestic building that stands tall and proud, displaying the history of Uruguay correctly.
Set in the epicentre of Plaza Independencia, Estevez Palace reflects a beautiful combination of Doric and Colonial styles. Built-in the year 1873, the building was initially owned by the Estevez family and was later acquired by the government in 1880. During the year 1890, the complex served as a working place for the president of Uruguay. It was only after 1985 that the then President decided to move to the Liberty Building after the restoration of democracy and the palace was converted into a museum. At present, the museum showcases numerous souvenirs and artefacts of the former presidents and other important officers. Visitors can take a look at all the prestigious honours that were given to the past presidents. The liberty building stands beside the place and is also a part of Plaza Independencia.
