About Palacio Salvo

Sandwich - Delicious Ingredient Ten

The Palacio Salvo, once the tallest building in all of South America, still dominates the skyline of Montevideo, not just with its sheer structure, but also imposing Gothic style architecture. Initially built to function as a luxury hotel, it now houses a variety of financial offices, restaurants, and even theatres.  Apartments are also available for rent to those who would like to stay and get a feel of the place. The night tour of the Palacio Salvo is great owing to the stunning views one can have of the sprawling city. This eclectic building was designed by an Italian architect Mario Palanti at the behest of the Salvo brothers. It was inaugurated in the year 1928. The architect is said to have designed the Palacio Salvo on lines similar to his structure Palacio Barolo in Buenos Aires. The building originally had a lighthouse built on top of it with a parabolic mirror but this unconventional addition was later removed. You can imagine what it looked like then, once you stand in front of Palacio Salvo.
