About Museo del Gaucho

The Museo del Gaucho origin back to 1978 under the title "Museo del Gaucho - Motivos Populares Uruguayos". The resolution of the Board of Directors of the "Bank of the Eastern Republic of Uruguay" created this space to rescue the culture and history of Uruguay. The museum is located on a three-story mansion which is originally a bank acquired from the Peirano Succession. The 1st floor is dedicated to the bank and holds some interesting samples of currency and accounting from the central bank. The 2nd floor constitutes artifacts from the history of Gaucho and some historical-architectural patrimony of Montevideo. It is extensive in its style with Italian influences, Renaissance French neoclassical, and predominance of French. The building was commissioned by Heber Jackson (owner) in 1896.

The building is a magnificent architectural gem by Alfred Massue. The Museo del Gaucho constitutes an irreplaceable heritage with the imitation both for its artisanal and functional value. The original collection of this museum has transpired from the 25 years of specialized work and dedication of Prof. Fernando O. Assunçao. The Artefacts present in the museum display have initially been part of private collections of Argentine and national personalities. A specified Gaucho room has a small but systemized selection of items. This museum is a must-see spot for people who are interested in knowing the South American Cowboy history. It was originally built to explore on foot, and hence there are no lifts or elevators available in the museum. The museum display and tour are free for all the public.
