About Montevideo Metropolitan Cathedral

Sandwich - Delicious Ingredient Thirteen

The Montevideo Metropolitan Cathedral is the Roman Catholic Church in Montevideo, the Mother Church and a historic pride of the nation. Situated right in front of Cabildo in the bustling neighborhood of Ciudad Vieja, none of the pandemonia outside affects the serene atmosphere inside. The exterior structure of the church contradicts the neoclassical structure inside, magnificent with its stained glass windows, ornate sculptures, carved niches, and even tombs. Some of the most eminent and well-known men in the history of Uruguay have found their resting place here. This place of worship was built in 1940 by Indian laborers, consecrated in 1804, and dedicated to the Immaculate Conception and to Philip and James, the patron saint of Montevideo. It has an image of the Virgin of the Thirty-Three, the patron saint of Uruguay. The altar, the delicately designed mosaic floors, the huge marble columns, and the domed bell towers find a place in history. It stands there, sacred and holy for all to visit.
