About Gothic Quarter (Barri Gotic)

Barcelona's Gothic Quarter dates back to the Middle Ages and is home to the incredible Barcelona Cathedral, Placa Sant Jaume, Placa Reial, and the city's most intact historic Roman Wall. An antique aspect of this quarter is its old Gothic buildings, narrow streets earmarked for pedestrians. Explore this interesting place built like a labyrinth of winding streets and hidden squares. Leisurely explore the many small squares, beautiful churches and Gothic residences, several of which have beautiful courtyards and are open to the public. Many sights are concentrated around the stunning Cathedral of Saint Eulalia, which is the most important tourist attraction in the Gothic Quarter.

The cathedral has a magnificent interior with stained-glass windows, beautifully carved choir stalls and the cloister which has an authentic medieval ambulatory. The Santa Maria del Pi is a 14th-century church designed in the typical Catalan Gothic style. It has a single wide nave and has no side aisles. The main attraction is the magnificent twelve-sided rose window, one of the world's largest. Another great Gothic church is the Church of Saints Justus and Pastor, considered the last of the great Gothic churches in Barcelona.

The Museo Frederic Marès, which displays a collection of sculptures, mostly from the Catalan school can be a historian's delight. The square is surrounded by a narrow maze of streets in a Barcelona neighborhood that is suffused with history, architecture, and the perseverance of the people to keep it alive.
