The Russian Museum holds the world’s largest collection of Russian art; it includes over 400,000 exhibits from the 10th to 21st century. The museum complex covers 30 hectares housing buildings and some outstanding monuments to 17th and 18th century architecture: Mikhailovsky Palace, Marble Palace, Summer Garden, Stroganov Palace, Peter the Great’s Cabin, Summer Palace and the Mikhailovsky Garden. The museum highlights are numerous and include sculptures and paintings, contemporary photography, contemporary art, decorative and folk art, applied art, drawings, watercolours, prints, numismatics and much more. The State Russian Museum today is an official research, restoration, preservation and educational centre. It also oversees all art museums across Russia.
Stroganov Palace and Mikhailovsky Castle, Mikhailovsky Palace, Marble Palace, Summer Garden, Peter the Great’s Cabin and the Mikhailovsky Garden in the 30 hectares of museum complex. The highlights include Kazmir Malevich’s Black Square and the masterpieces of Ivan Nikitin, Vasily Surikov, Boris Kustdiev and Valentin Serov.
Taking the metro is the easiest way to reach the museum. Buses and cabs are also available.
