It is known as the House of Books (or Dom Knigi) and is the biggest library found in St.Petersburg. Singer House is known as the city’s intellectual and cultural icon, located opposite the Kazan Cathedral and besides the Ekaterinsky Canal. Designed by Pavel Suzor, the building’s plan was based on a skyscraper only to have been refused due to the St.Ptersburg city code about restrictive sizes of buildings. The six-storey building was built in 1902-1904 for the Singer Sewing Machine Company in Russia by the renowned architect Pavel Syuzor. The building is crowned with a glass tower, topped by a spectacular glass globe sculpture created by Estonian artist Amandus Adamson. The Singer House was one of the first modern buildings that cannot be missed. It stands, impressive and tall in the heart of the city, with its arrays of glass windows and detailed statues ornating the front facet.
