About State Hermitage Museum

A place of wonder, a palace of luxury and one that resonates with royalty. That is the State Hermitage Museum found within the Winter Palace, one of the largest museums in the world and a truly impressive sight to see for travelers. With its stately columns and highly vaulted arches, it is indeed fit for kings and queens to live. Initially known as the residence of the Romanov Tsar’s royal family, the museum today harbors over 3.000 items in its collection. Visitors usually walk through the site with the help of a tour guide to discover the vast abundance of riches ranging from Impressionist art pieces to the Oriental treasures that one could not possibly imagine existed.

How to reach

St. Petersburg has several bus stations, to reach the museum take the bus lines 7, 10, 24, 191. Buses run every day between 05:30 a.m. and 01:30 a.m and the ticket costs 30 RUB.

For metro take the lines Admiralteyskaya, Nevsky Prospekt and Gostiny Dvor which stops near the museum. One can buy a metro ticket from the ticket machines at the stations. A single journey costs 35 RUB.

The quickest way to get to the Hermitage Museum is to take a taxi, the cost will be about 800 to 1000 RUB.

Tips

  • The museum has a cafeteria on the ground floor and it is not permissible to bring food or drink into the premises.
  • All bags are scanned at the entrance.
  • Large bags, backpacks, suitcases, umbrellas or winter coats must be left in the cloakroom.
  • Pictures and videos can be taken in permanent exhibitions, but without using flash. In temporary exhibitions, it is forbidden to take photos and videos.
  • The museum has a souvenir shop.
  • Audioguides are available in Russian, English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Japanese, Chinese, and Korean. 
  • Access for people with disabilities.Wheelchair accessible.
  • There are paid mobile applications and audio guides for the museum.
  • It is convenient to wear comfortable clothes to visit the museum since you will walk a lot.
  • Wear comfortable shoes as well.
  • Tickets can be bought on the same day of the visit at the ticket offices or at the automatic machines or in advance on the museum’s website.

The entry ticket to the Main Museum Complex and its branches fo the visitors costs 700 RUB.
Entry for The Main Museum Complex, the General Staff Building and Winter Palace of Peter the Great for Russian and Belarusian citizens costs 400 RUB.
Entry ticket to one of the museum branches is 300 RUB.
Entry for schoolchildren, students, pensioners of the Russian Federation and other categories of visitors is FREE.
The entrance to the museum is free on the first Thursday of each month and on December 7.
