St. Petersburg's famous monument, the Bronze Horseman is one of the most recognizable symbols of the city. It is also the subject of one of the greatest poems in the Russian language, written by Alexander Pushkin in 1782. The statue was created by French sculptor Étienne Maurice Falconet and took 12 years to finish. The statue was commissioned by Catherine the Great to honour Peter I (Peter the Great). The pedestal of the monument, the "Thunder Stone," is said to be the largest rock ever moved by man. The statue stands on the beautiful Senate Square and faces the Neva River. It is surrounded by prominent landmarks of the city. According to the legend, enemy forces can never take over St. Petersburg while the "Bronze Horseman" stands in the middle of the city.
