It was in 1566 that the fort was given this shape and form by Emperor Akbar after he made Lahore the capital city. To achieve this current state, the fort was rebuilt and restored several times. In the year 1618, the fort was modified by Jehangir but it later ended up being damaged by the Sikhs and the British. It is only a partially restored structure we see today. The fort houses within itself beautiful palaces, vast halls and lush gardens that were built by Mughal emperors like Akbar, Jehangir, Shah Jahan, and Aurangzeb. Such is the splendor of the fort that it can easily be compared to the forts that both Delhi and Agra house. People are also of the belief that the site itself conceals a few of Lahore's most ancient remains. With its beautifully secluded aura, the fort is wonderfully majestic and a brilliant place to get lost in the bygone eras of the city. One can enter the fort from the western side through the massive Alamgiri Gate which was built by Aurangzeb in the year 1674. This gate was essentially used as a private entrance to the royal quarters at that time.
