About The Groynes

The Groynes offers solace to the soul like no other place. It's a great spot to get away from the city, right in the city. The Groynes feel so removed from the busy city, quiet walks, streams, native planting, for those that want peace and quiet. Duck ponds and fishing for the kids, picnic areas for the family and dog walking, Nice recreational grass/wetlands are suitable for an enjoyable walk, interaction with nature's quacking creatures and others, good spot for a BBQ on the right day, and good asset for Christchurch area.  Named after the large concrete blocks that jut out into the Otukaikino Creek, the creek now forms several lakes and waterways through The Groynes. It was cut off during the 1930s from  Waimakariri River.  Large power boats are provided for families can enjoy the water ride, you can also enjoy watching model boats sailed by the local club. Trout fishing is allowed in some of the lakes, but anglers must get a permit first. The dog park is very popular here. They are given a swimming area, agility parks, an exercise area, bush walks. If you are looking for an ideal spot for an outing with family and friends, the large open picnic areas are just right. There is a large playground which gives a great chance for children to burn off some energy. This is ideal for more serious walkers and runners, they get a chance to enjoy breathing pollution-free fresh air during the five-kilometer return Waimairi Walkway. Pack a picnic and spend an afternoon in the sunshine. you get a chance to see many species of duck including the New Zealand scaup and other birds including swallows, pukekos, and kingfishers can be seen by keen birdwatchers.
