About Port Hills

The Port Hills are the remains of an ancient volcano, with fantastic lofty ridge walks and mountain bike tracks, to keep you busy for days. The views across the Pacific ocean to Kaikoura in one direction and the Banks Peninsula towards Akaroa in the other will take your breath away. The Port Hills enfold Christchurch to the South-East and look back to the Southern Alps across the Canterbury Plains. This is one of Christchurch's many playgrounds, really, a drawcard for cyclists, motorists, walkers, history buffs and plants people.  These Port Hills are the range of hills in New Zealand, located between the city of Christchurch and Lyttelton. One can find so many lovely wee spots, parks, cafes, walks. present from Godley Heads through to Gebbies Pass. You can enjoy a good stiff walk in the Godley Heads loop track and marvelous vistas. For people who love Trekking, this is the best place. There are also running tracks, cycling tracks, hiking trails, and walkways. Rapaki Track, Bridle Path, Huntsbury Track, and  Bowenvale- Sugarloaf Circuit are some of the trails present. The Banks Peninsula here is one of the indigenous plant species found here. they also inhabit rock crevices along with rare ferns. You can find silver tussock and other native grasses on the more exposed hillsides. There were Deforestation and huge clearance of native bush took place during early settlement. Even after the heavy Deforestation, a diverse range of wildlife and plant life are present in the Port Hills. Native birds such as the bellbird (korimako or koparara) fantail, silvereye, grey warbler, and shining cuckoo are commonly found in the remaining bush. While the wood pigeon which is seen in the area is a native to New Zealand others, such as the common blackbird, common chaffinch and song thrush are introduced and very populous species. A great area to hang out and keep returning too!

  • It is a nice place for short touge runs and has a great night view.
  • A steep track but stunning views over the city to the Southern Alps and of Lyttelton and Banks Peninsula make it worthwhile!
  • There are a number of memorial seats on the way up and a stone shelter at the top to commemorate the pioneer women of Canterbury.
  •  The eroded crater rim of the long-extinct volcano is spectacularly scenic.
  •    A paradise for Mountain bikers, walkers and paragliders.

How to reach

Hiring a taxi is the best option to reach there. distance is 15km. Fare being 40 NZD.

Tips

  • Carry Helmet if you are interested in cycle riding. 
  • carry your own food as it is not available there.
  • Carry spikes if you have a love for cycling or for a little fun jog.
  • Carry drinking water as there is no possibility of its availability there.
  • Wear comfortable shoes since you need to walk a lot.
  • Carry winter wear since there is a possibility of low temperatures.
