Hidden away from the hustle and bustle of suburban Christchurch, this is an attractive bush and stream walk, alive with bird calls and the smell of fresh vegetation. This large reserve chases a natural river corridor. The Styx Mill Conservation Reserve provides a haven for birds and plants along the Styx River just north of Christchurch. Spread over 57 hectares and chasing the river for a little over a kilometer and a half, this reserve is home to over 50 different bird species in the reserve including many wetland birds which are sadly losing habitats elsewhere. This historic area was first cultivated by Maori tribes as its wetlands, due to its easy access to the sea, food and undertook flax cultivation. While the European settlers came to use the area for sheep farming, currently It came into public ownership in the 1970s and today the community plays a large part in maintaining the reserve. There are 10 species of freshwater fish in the river of which just one, the brown trout, has been introduced. Many need easy access to the sea for spawning, making the reserve an important area in maintaining these species. It is wetland park and walkway, part of Styx River water body corridor. Nice walking paths, relax walk or exercising, also for dog walking. Interspersed with ponds and small islands, plenty of ducks and wetland bushes. It is a good place for the whole family.
