Maya Museum (Museo Maya de Cancún), one of the largest museum projects in Mexico, is where one can get to know about the region’s rich history of the Mayan civilization. It has important artifacts from the State of Quintana Roo and symbolic pieces from the sites of Palenque, Chichén Itzá, and Comalcalco. The design of the museum is such that visitors appreciate the climate of Cancun while having a feel of the shelter of the pergolas in the large open areas. The access to the exhibition halls is through two ramps, one helical and one straight, located at both ends of the halls and also two elevators. Visitors can also visit the San Miguelito Archeological Zone through a jungle path from the museum. This archaeological site consists of four groups of structures that support wooden houses and palm houses in which several large Mayan families lived during the final years prior to the arrival of the Spanish conquerors. The museum is mainly devoted to the archaeology of Quintana Roo. It chronicles its 2,000-year history from founding to the 19th century. The museum also houses general characteristics of the Mayan civilization including its economic activities, its writings, and the calendars, and its rites such as the ball game. The museum also has temporary exhibitions related to its work.
