About Cancún Underwater Museum

The Cancún Underwater Museum is dedicated to conserving the coral reef in artistic form. The museum has a total of 500 life-sized concrete sculptures by the British sculptor Jason deCaires Taylor submerged in the ocean at the Cancún National Marine Park. The museum was planned with the dual ideas of conserving the natural coral reef for marine life and for establishing a coral reef garden as an underwater attraction. All of the sculptures are fixed to the seabed and were made with pH-neutral cement, coral, and seaweed. Algae is able to grow and develop and attracts the marine life which feeds on the coral, which in turn grow again, thus promoting both coral reef and marine life. The layout is divided into two galleries at the depths of eight meters and four meters. The first is suitable for both divers and snorkelers and the second is permitted only for snorkeling. Adventurous people, this is for you... Not adventurous come and have a look, it will still be exciting.
