El Rey is named after a mask found here that was believed to be dedicated to the Sun God. El Rey Ruins is located in the heart of the Hotel Zone; hence it is easily accessible to visitors. It is also convenient to see the site in a short time as it is very small. The Mayans built temples and tombs here from A.D. 900. However, the main attraction here may not be the ruins themselves but the iguanas! It is reported that visitors flock to El Rey to mingle with the hundreds of iguanas that have invaded the ruins to capture pictures.
