Skiers and snowboarders alike should add Shymbulak to their list of slopes to tackle. This ski resort is the largest in Central Asia, located in the Medeu Valley of the Zailiysky Alatau Mountains near Almaty.
The 99-acre resort boasts 12 km (7.5 miles) of ski runs at an elevation of 2,200 m (7,200 feet) above sea level. The lifts will take you from the resort up another 1,000 m (3,000 feet) so you can challenge yourself on slopes with a vertical drop of 920 m. During the winter months, there’s a perfect snow base of almost 2 m (70 inches).
If you’re just a beginner skier or snowboarder without your own equipment, that’s okay too. You can take lessons and rent your skis and poles at the school. Even during the ski season, the temperatures hover just below freezing. Perfect conditions for a ski vacation. Stay at the resort hotel so you can make use of the snow day after day and hit the runs early.
