How many mosques can boast they have been on a silver coin? The Central Mosque Almaty can. It is one of the largest mosques in the city. It is the second mosque to be built on the same site. The first dating back to 1890 was destroyed by fire in 1987.
The mosque was built in the Timurid style and took six years to complete. The dome that was built, was decorated with calligraphic verses from the Quran in 2000. Numerous blue domes and tall minarets adorn the white stone exterior.
