A visit to Venice's world-famous opera house, La Fenice is a must for classical music lovers. In the sumptuous interiors of this elegant building, composers such as Verdi, Bellini, Rossini, Stravinsky, and other greats regaled audiences with sublime music.
The theatre has had its fair share of misfortune, being burnt to cinders in several unfortunate fires. Calamity first struck in 1774 when the city's leading opera house, Teatro San Benedetto, was reduced to ashes in a fire. On its place rose a new opera house in 1792. But a similar tragedy struck again in 1836. The last fire which gutted the opera house occurred in 1996.
In spite of the recurring tragedies, the opera house continued to rise from the ashes, like the mythical bird Phoenix. Hence the name La Fenice, which means The Phoenix, is fitting.
The magic of this historic building is best experienced during the opera season.
