About Canal Grande

Perhaps the most prominent symbol of Venice, the Canal Grande is the main waterway of Venice, snaking through the heart of the city in a reverse 'S' shape.
Nearly 4 km long, there are only four bridges across the canal: Rialto Bridge, the Ponte degli Scalzi, the Ponte dell'Accademia, and the recent Ponte della Costituzione.
There is plenty of history lined up on both sides of its banks, and it's really pretty.
As many as 170 lavishly built, historic buildings dating from the 13th to 18th century are situated on the banks of the canal. And the best way to experience this stunning confluence of history and beauty is via a vaporetto or a gondola ride.
