Mount of Olives is a mountain ridge bordering the eastern side of and lying adjacent to the old city of Jerusalem. The ridge is named after the famous olive groves that used to cover the slopes of the Mountain. The place is a large cemetery of over 3000 years old and holds approximately 150,000 graves belonging to the Jewish families living there. The place is rumored to have witnessed several key events in the life of Jesus as related in the Gospels. Also, it is believed that Mount Olives is the place where Jesus ascended to heaven. Today, it is a major pilgrimage site for Catholics, Eastern Orthodox, and Protestants.
