Also known as the Church of the Resurrection or Church of Anastasis by Orthodox Christians, is a church which lies in the Christian Quarter of the Old City of Jerusalem. The church upholds two holiest sites in the Christian religion - one where Jesus of Nazareth was crucified and the other site is Jesus’s empty tomb where he was buried and resurrected. The building stands as a witness to many historical events. It was once destroyed by fire in May 614 A.D. Later, in the 9th Century, the tomb of Anastasis was destroyed in an earthquake and the year of 1009, it suffered massive destruction in the hands of Fatimid Caliph Al-Hakim bi-Amr Allah. Much of the monument has been restored in the later years.
