About Istiqlal Mosque

The Istiqlal Mosque (Masjid Istiqlal) inspires with its enormous construction and contemporary architecture. Standing as one of the largest mosques in South East Asia, The mosque was open to the public in 1978, Istiqlal Mosque was built to memorialize Indonesia’s independence from the Netherlands. 'Istiqlal' means independence in Arabic. The mosque is opposite to the Jakarta Cathedral representing the acceptance of religious diversity.
