Only a few steps from Treptow harbour, is the Soviet War Memorial in Treptower Park. Surrounded by tall trees and lush green meadows, you enter the cemetery of honour through a large triumphal arch. Once you enter, there is peace and silence everywhere. It was built by Soviet architect Yakov Belopolsky for 7,000 to 8000 Soviet soldiers who fell in the Battle of Berlin in April–May 1945. In the park stands the three-meter-high sculpture of Mutter Heimat, a woman who mourns for her fallen sons. There are five lawns and eight sarcophagi. The lawns are symbolic of the community graves. The actual cemetery for the Red Army soldiers is behind the sarcophagi. At the far end is the statue of a Soviet soldier who sits enthroned above the mausoleum. He carries a child in his arms and lowers his sword over a battered swastika. Every year a wreath-laying ceremony is held when visitors and politicians commemorate the fallen soldiers and the liberation of Berlin.
