Can’t get enough of museums? Then you’ll love Museumsinsel. Museumsinsel translates to Museum Island, aptly named, as it houses some of Germany’s most important museums. Located in within the city of Berlin, on an island in the Spree river, the island is home to a number of Berlin State Museums including: the Altes Museum (old museum), the Neues Museum (new museum), the Alte Nationalgalerie (old national gallery), Bode Museum, and the Pergamon Museum. The newest member of the museum family to open on Museum Island is the Humboldt Forum, set to open in 2019 in the Berlin Palace. The entire complex has been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There is a master plan to renovate and modernize the area, which was started in 1999. The plan envisions a promenade linking the museums, new exhibition areas, cafes and museum shops. But don’t wait for the renovations to be completed. With so many museums, each with its own unique collections, there’s bound to be something here for everyone.
