No visit to Berlin is complete without a visit to the Pergamon Museum. This museum, visited by more than a million people each year, has three important antiquities collections. The Antikensammlung is a collection of classical antiquities and showcases some of the world’s most important Greek and Roman art, including Greek and Roman architecture. The Vorderasiatisches Museum focuses on artifacts from Mesopotamia, Syria, and Anatolia. This area houses reconstructions of the Ishtar Gate and Processional Way of Babylon which date back to the 6th century BCE. In the Museum fur Islamische Kunst you’ll find an extensive collection of Islamic art dating from the 7th to 19th centries. This includes the stone facade of the palace of Mshatta. The museum has been undergoing major renovations that started in 2013. The hall that houses the Pergamon Altar will be closed until 2023. But don’t let that stop you. Many exhibits remain open, including several special exhibitions.
