Alexanderplatz, often called Alex, is one of the biggest central square and traffic junctions in Berlin's Mitte district. It is in the center of the Berlin's City East and is famous for the 365 meter TV Tower and the nearby Rotes Rathaus - Berlin's town hall and its many shops, departmental stores, malls and the large shopping mall Alexa. Alexanderplatz is easy to reach by public transport. In the square is the World Time Clock that is a continually rotating installation that shows the time around the globe. This square was named as to honor Alexander I, Tsar of Russia, when he visited Berlin in 1805. One million people gathered here, on 4 November 1989 to demonstrate against the GDR regime shortly before the fall of the Berlin Wall. This was considered to be the largest anti-government demonstration in its history. Alfred Döblin portrayed the scene here in his novel "Berlin Alexanderplatz" that was filmed by Fassbinder for a TV series. It was shown as a bustling city in the 1920s before the imminent Nazi takeover.
