The open area at the edge of Old Town is a place for a gathering spot. Since Estonia's first period of independence, the Freedom Square (Vabaduse väljak) has been a place of parades and fanfare; also known for the place of national symbolism. Though it got neglected during the Soviet and post-Soviet period, it was revived after extensive renovation in the year 2009; thus restoring its former glory. There are also several cafes, galleries, and benches in the area, with interesting architecture inclusive of the Neo-Gothic St. John's Church and several art deco buildings.
Another place worth reckoning is the Vabaduse Monument. Commemorating the War of Independence, this is perhaps the most prominent monument in the square. The most spectacular feature in the church is the ongoing blue, white and black light show. The light show continuously features the colours of the Estonian Flag by the Five Lighted Pillars.
