Originally built in 13th century and later renovated in the 19th century Parish style architecture, the church houses many works of Ivan Mestrovic, Croatia's most famous sculptor. The colourful tile is a treat to your eyes and makes it unique from other churches. Located in the upper town, this church is one of the oldest buildings dating back to the thirteenth century. Having constructed in 1880, Saint Mark’s uniquely colourful tiled roof is a creation of Friedrich Schmidt and Herman Bollé. On it, you can see the medieval coat of arms of Croatia, Dalmatia and Slavonia on the left side, and the emblem of Zagreb on the right. Inside the church you can see the sculptures by Ivan Meštrović and art work by Jozo Kljaković and Ljubo Babić. The frescos have been renovated, while the ceiling gilded with 22-carat gold leaflets and a new organ has been recently installed.
The portal consists of 15 sculptures (11 stone gothic sculptures and 4 wooden baroque sculptures) in 11 niches. The sculptures portray Virgin Mary with the Child Christ, St. Mark and the apostles.
The church is accessible on foot from Zagreb ban Jelačić square. You can walk through the stone gate or take the shortest funicular ride.
