Palace of the Inquisition is one of the ancient city’s most beautiful spots, but it houses dark artefacts from a tragic chapter in the history of the country. This 18th century building was once used as a place to try non Catholics and Jews coming into the city, as well as people who were believed guilty of crimes.Palace of the Inquisition is also a beautiful example of Spanish Colonial architecture featuring a grandiose entrance, long wooden balconies, and an ornate cast iron fence. The lush courtyard is filled with palm trees, bright yellow plaster walls and detailed tile work. The Spanish Inquisition carried out its dreadful work until 1812.The Inquisition’s main purpose was to defend and protect the Catholic Church from threats from crime and witch-craft. Once a confession was signed, the victim was sentenced to death in public in the courtyard outside. The Palace of the Inquisition has a lot of dark history that can be still felt around the area. It is a must visit, specially for history buffs.
It is 5.6 Kms from city center and be reached by taxi. It will cost you almost 50000 COP.
