The gleaming white building, high above Cartagena’s protected bay, is the famous Convento de la Popa. Erected in 1607, it can be seen from almost anywhere in the city. Getting here is easy- just hire a taxi or sign up with a tour group, however walking the narrow path that leads up to the top of the mountain is not worth taking due to safety reasons. The convent is amazingly beautiful and offers jaw-dropping views of the city below. From above a 150m (500ft) hill, you can see almost everything, from the tall skyscrapers to the rustic architecture of the old walled city. The flower-filled interior courtyard of the convent, the huge gold plated altar and the many statues and photo opportunities will make this tour worthwhile. The area is also notorious for robbery. Make sure you do not carry any valuables. keep money and passport zipped up, close to your body. Always stay with the crowd and do not venture by yourself.
You can reach by taxi as it is almost 9 Kms from city center. There are also many tour operators who provide round trip transportation to guests. It will cost you 60000 COP to 70000 COP.
