Built by the Spanish in 1536 and refurbished later in 1657, the massive El Castillo San Felipe de Barajas is the largest and most impressive Spanish colonial fortress in the Country. The monumental mega-structure sits atop San Lazaro Hill, offering amazing views across the harbor. Featuring secret tunnels, cannons and other armaments, it is a marvel of military engineering that was built to protect the city from the land and sea.There is lot to explore here. It can get crowded during peak season but it is worth your visit. The massive building is nothing like you have ever seen before. The impressive structure is a good example of the rich history of the country. There is an Old Shoe Monument just outside the Castillo de San Felipe de Barajas which is a very popular photo spot. When you are in Cartagena, make sure you visit this amazing piece of history.
You can reach by taxi as it is 4.4 Kms from the city center. The route via Avenue Sucre is the fastest route to Castillo de San Felipe de Barajas.
