About Saint Joseph's Oratory of Mount Royal

Saint-Joseph's Oratory of Mount Royal is the largest church in Canada and is one of the largest shrines in the world devoted to a saint. It started as a small chapel in 1904 as the Roman Catholic basilica had grown to contain a cryptic church, a museum, gardens, a 56-bell carillon, and one of the largest church domes in the world. Saint Joseph's Oratory has 283 steps, of which pilgrims climb 99 on their knees to show their sincerity. It is believed that people from different parts of the world come to seek healing in this shrine with a belief of healing miracles. Built by Saint André Bessette, a Roman Catholic priest who was famed for his healing miracles. The Oratory's most outstanding feature is its magnificent Renaissance-style dome, the third-largest in the world after Saint Peter's Basilica in the Vatican City and the Basilica of Our Lady of Peace in the Ivory Coast.
