About Montreal Museum of Fine Arts

Get set out to experience Canada’s unique cultural heritage and engage with international modern art at this large museum that houses more than 40,000 objects which includes outstanding collections of paintings, graphics, furniture, textiles, sculpture, and the decorative and fine arts. Witness the incredible finest collections of  North America's Eskimo prints and carvings and Northwest Coast Indian art is preserved there; along with the invaluable collection of prints and drawings. Established in 1847 as the Montreal Society of Artists; it soon developed into the Art Association of Montreal in 1860 and assumed its present name in 1948–49. It moved into its present home, a neoclassical building designed by Edward and W.S. Maxwell, in 1912. A new wing opened in 1976. Few of the must-see items in the museum are the Mona Lisa at the Louvre, etc. This iconic museum has been building its collection of fine arts for more than 150 years. A priceless assortment of Canadian and international works, masterpieces by such renowned artists as Rembrandt, El Greco, Renoir, Cézanne and Picasso. Other amazing collections include 18th-century English porcelain, artefacts from World War I and several beautiful pieces of furniture designed by Frank Gehry.

Tips

  •  The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts is open every day but Monday.
  • Tickets can be bought at the door or in advance online.
  • You can browse through the bookstore to buy affordable jewellery, textiles, and sculptures as well as art books and magazines. Have lunch or a snack at the on-site bistro.
  • The best time to visit the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts is on Wednesday afternoon, after 15:00: the museum has extended hours for the major exhibitions, so you’ll have two hours to discover the permanent collections in peace when most visitors leave the place, and head to the temporary exhibition after.
  • Try not to schedule it for Sundays as it may be quite busy.
  • Ages 31 and up: $12 for the collections and discovery exhibitions / $20 with the major exhibitions
  • Ages 13 to 30: free for the collections and discovery exhibitions/ $12 for the major exhibitions
  • Ages 12 and under (must be accompanied by an adult): Free / Free
  •  Please take note that  for ages 65 and up there is free admission on Thursdays to the collections and discovery exhibitions/ $20 with the major exhibitions
  • Also, note that on Wednesday evenings (from 5 p.m.) the permanent collection is closed and the major exhibitions ticket is $10.
