As a tourist in São Paulo don’t let the Mercado Municipal Paulistano or Municipal Market pass you by. It is the largest public market in the historic centre of the city. The market opened in 1933 near the river where wholesalers and retailers could sell their wares. You’ll find all of the fruits, spices, cereals, and meats on the first floor with a restaurant on the second.
Although it sells typical market-type things, the Mercado is better known for its exterior columns and stained glass. Thirty-two panels with 72 stained glass works depict food production in São Paulo. One of the artists created the stained glass windows for cathedrals and churches in the city. The Municipal Market could be seen as a “temple of food.”
If you’re looking for the market, be sure to ask the locals for the Mercadão, or "big market.”
I is about 2.3 kms from the city centre.
