About Huayna Potosi

Huayna Potosi is the closest high mountain to La Paz, located near El Alto and about 25 km north of La Paz in the Cordillera Real. Meaning “Thunderous Youth” in Aymara, it is an almost 20,000-foot-high peak and accessible to beginner climbers, mountaineers, and trekkers. It has the city’s largest hydroelectric power plant with its glacial water and provides a picture-perfect backdrop. Climbing Huayna Potosi is certainly no easy feat. Starting at the Zongo Pass, hikers can climb the first 1-3 hours and there is an option to pitch a tent or stay in the refuge. The next leg takes between five and seven hours depending on fitness levels to trek across the snow, ice walls, and glacial cracks. Upon reaching the top of the peak, there will be the incredible views of the Altiplano, La Paz, Lake Titicaca, and the entire Cordillera Real. To view the sunrise from there is an added advantage. This is one of the most populous climbs in South America. Finally the decent is three hours back to base camp and then to Laguna Zongo, where there will be a taxi or bus to travel back to La Paz.

Tips

  • Highly recommended for the climbers to spend at least 3-6 days adjusting to the altitude in La Paz prior to climbing Huayna Potosi.
  • People attempting the climb should also be healthy and physically fit.
  • Camping at both Base Camp and High Camp is free.
  • At the end of Lake Zongo, there is a Refugio which offers accommodation and meals.
  • Winter (May to September) is the best climbing season as days are sunny and dry.
  • An early start is advisable as, from 8:00 a.m. onward, the snow becomes less stable, increasing the risk of an avalanche.
  • Bring a warm sleeping bag and a good tent if staying.
  • Always carry an ample amount of water so that you can stay hydrated during the tour.
  • Wear comfortable shoes and should take a proper tour guide.
