Huayna Potosi is the closest high mountain to La Paz, located near El Alto and about 25 km north of La Paz in the Cordillera Real. Meaning “Thunderous Youth” in Aymara, it is an almost 20,000-foot-high peak and accessible to beginner climbers, mountaineers, and trekkers. It has the city’s largest hydroelectric power plant with its glacial water and provides a picture-perfect backdrop. Climbing Huayna Potosi is certainly no easy feat. Starting at the Zongo Pass, hikers can climb the first 1-3 hours and there is an option to pitch a tent or stay in the refuge. The next leg takes between five and seven hours depending on fitness levels to trek across the snow, ice walls, and glacial cracks. Upon reaching the top of the peak, there will be the incredible views of the Altiplano, La Paz, Lake Titicaca, and the entire Cordillera Real. To view the sunrise from there is an added advantage. This is one of the most populous climbs in South America. Finally the decent is three hours back to base camp and then to Laguna Zongo, where there will be a taxi or bus to travel back to La Paz.
Drive takes around 1h 33m (49.6 km) from city to the destination which cost around $95-$120
Uber is the cheapest way and will charge around $16 - $21
A minibus leaves at 5:00 a.m. and a larger bus at 6:00 a.m.
