Chacaltaya, situated 3,600 meters above sea level, is a mountain in the Cordillera Real-range of the Bolivian Andes. Chacaltaya's glacier, formerly one of the highest in South America was completely gone by 2009 due to global warming. Its elevation is 5,421 m. The mountain is reached via a one hour drive along a very narrow single-lane road. After 15 minutes' walk, there is an impressive view of the Cordillera Real. The old ski resort has one of the most beautiful mountain views to Huayna Potosi, Illimani, Titicaca, and El Alto. Some beautiful condors can be seen flying in that area.
There is no public transport to Chacaltaya.
For those who prefer to travel on their own, it's possible to take a taxi from La Paz (1.5-hour drive and costs around Bs 200)
