About Vietnamese Women's Museum

Run by the Women’s Union of Vietnam, the Vietnamese Women’s Museum is a national attraction built in honor of Vietnamese women and the various roles they play in society. It spans across 5 floors and 3 sections. It is a national attraction established by the Socialist Republic of Vietnam in 1987. This museum's narrative is about women of the rice paddy fields, service workers, street vendors, female business leaders, academics and mothers, all are very well represented and displayed. Displays are beautifully presented in a storyline format with signs in English and French. The historic documentation, including wedding cards from the Kinh community and Taoist books of the Dao people, provides the visitors a window into the life of the Vietnamese women. The exhibits include more than 1000s artefacts depicting women in family, history, and fashions.

A unique and surprising museum, Vietnam Women Museum tells the story of sacrifice and the silent contributions of women. It is located in the heart of the city of Hanoi, Vietnam. The Museum offers a fantastic journey to learn about the role of Vietnamese women in the country's growth and development.
 
It was opened in 1995 for the public. The museum is home to more than 1000 artefacts, photographs with their contribution, and other unique creations that will definitely surprise you. It houses textiles, metals, wood, paper, pottery, leather, horn, soil, and glass, etc. If you would like to delve deep to gain insights into the Vietnamese women’s role in society, you should not miss the permanent, temporary and special exhibitions of the museum. 
 
There are several exhibitions which showcase how Vietnamese women are able to make traditional unique costumes and accessories- jewellery to promote art and culture. The responsibility from marriage to motherhood of a wife along with traditional values, customs, knowledge, and folk experiences throughout the life of Vietnamese Women. You will also learn about their participation in building the nation through their, bravery, and kindness.
 
The museum hosts several exhibitions depicting mother worship, pieces of contemporary art, participation in the historical events of Vietnamese women as well as their roles in the past, present, and future. One of the special exhibitions shows " Journey of entrepreneurship " introduces 15 faces of Vietnamese women who shine bright in the field of business, education, tourism, hospitality, and health care, etc. There is a souvenir shop on the premises for you to take home something unique to make the journey memorable for a lifetime. The museum offers to explore many faces and changing roles of Vietnamese women.

It is 1 km away from the city center.

The easiest way to reach the museum is by taxi. You can also take bus #8, 31, 36 or 49 to reach the museum.

Tips

  • If you are a student then take your student card for your trip around Southeast Asia, because you'll get discounts in many museums!
  •  If you go to the Hoa Lo Prison first, they have coupons for 50% off on entrance fee to the Women's museum!
  •  There is a cute little patisserie across the road called Madame Huong, 39 Ly Thuong Kiet, which has delicious treats.
  • You will need about 2 hours to get through everything.
  • Go early because there is a lot of reading to do.
