Saint Joseph Cathedral is a Roman Catholic cathedral built in the neo-Gothic style about 120 years ago. The cathedral was constructed after the French Army defeated the Vietnamese forces at Hanoi and bears a remarkable resemblance to many of France’s most famous cathedrals. The exterior of the cathedral follows a western style while the main interior part is decorated in the Vietnamese way with two typical colors, yellow and red. Although Gothic-styled, there is a statue of Mother Maria in front of the cathedral. This cathedral is usually crowded with hundreds of people mainly on the weekends. Although the church interiors and exteriors are in a state of decay, it is worth noting the profound influence of this church in Vietnamese Catholic culture. The St. Joseph Cathedral of Hanoi is a major architectural attraction in Vietnam.
It is 1.8 km away from the city center.
