About Tran Quoc Pagoda

Tran Quoc Pagoda is the oldest Buddhist temple in Hanoi, standing for more than 1500 years. it is located on a small island near the southeastern shore of the West Lake. Tran Quoc Pagoda was originally named as “Khai Quoc”, which translates into “opening a country”. The pagoda is surrounded by beautiful, lush greenery. The Buddhist structure is not just visually impressive, it encompasses peace and serenity too. It has served as a relaxation spot and place of reverence for Vietnam's royalty for hundreds of years. The pagoda mainly consists of a small museum with a remarkable collection of artefacts and documents dating back to thousands of years. The worshipping statue “Thích ca thap niet ban”, is considered to be one of the most beautiful statues in Vietnam.

How to reach

It is 5.3 km away from the city center.

 The best way to reach the Pagoda is by taxi. You can also take bus #50 which drops you in front of the Pagoda or you can take bus #31, 41, 55A, 55B and get off at stop An Duong which is a 5-minute walk from the Pagoda.

Tips

  • If you don't have your shoulders and knees covered, you may still enter the general area of the pagoda outside. 
  • Once done with the inside, make sure to check out the courtyard with the tower.
  • Shoulders and knees should be covered- men should wear a collared shirt. It shows respect.
  • Be quiet and avoid talking if you can- these places are where people commune with the ancestors and they require peace and calm to do so.
  • Try not to turn your back to a pagoda- It is against religious practice.
  • Visitors are required to dress modestly and respect the sentiments of the locals and the monks at the pagoda.
  • Plan your visit to the pagoda in such a way so that you can arrive during the morning and stay till late afternoon.
  • If you are with children, make sure they are not noisy.
  • Switch off your phones when you are inside. Talking loudly is considered offensive.
