About One Pillar Pagoda

The One Pillar Pagoda, a Buddhist temple, was built by Emperor Ly Thai Tongin in1049, in gratitude to the Vietnamese Goddess of Mercy who blessed the emperor with an heir. The structure reprsents a lotus blossom rising up from the water and it is built on a  single stone pillar, hence, the name "One Pillar Pagoda". The surroundings of the pagoda are picturesque, especially during summers when the lotus blossoms are in full bloom. Although the pagoda was demolished by the French at the end of the occupation in 1954, it was subsequently rebuilt to its original form by the succeeding governments. The pagoda is believed to have magical healing powers, with many ill and aged visiting every year hoping for good health. Also, childless couples from all over the country visit the pagoda in the hope of a progeny.
