The Brooklyn Bridge, a hybrid cable-stayed/suspension bridge in New York City, connects the boroughs of Manhattan and Brooklyn, spanning the East River. The Brooklyn Bridge with a main span of 1,595.5 feet and a height of 276.5 ft., was built in the 19th century and showcases a marvel of modern engineering techniques.
The bridge was the first in the world to make use of steel cable wire for construction. It has been named as a National Historic Landmark by the U.S National Service. Opened to the public on May 24th, 1883, the bridge witnessed a stampede because panic created of an imminent collapse. To convince New Yorkers of its sturdy construction, 21 elephants were made to walk across the bridge in May 1884.
