The St. Louis Cathedral is one of New Orleans' most notable landmarks and has maintained its place since 1718. St Louis Cathedral was only a crude wooden structure in the ancient time. Later it enlarged its area with bricks and timber and completed its construction in 1727. Unfortunately, the church was destroyed in New Orleans Fire on Good Friday, 1788.
After five years again the church came out in the limelight as it was entitled as a cathedral in 1793. It was dedicated to Louis IX, sainted King of France. The cathedral underwent several renovations as it was damaged by bombing, and hurricanes in later years. You can explore the tomb of the practitioner of Voodoo- Marie Laveau in the cemetery of Saint Louis which is quite popular and attracts millions of tourists every year. Locals say that the famous American actor Nicolas Cage bought an empty tomb here to be used as his final resting place.
People also believe that the cathedral is haunted by one of the priests of the cathedral - Père Dagobert’s voice can be heard chanting the Kyrie on rainy days. The impressive architectural style, attractive frescoes on the wall and dome, rococo-style gilded altar, the stained glass windows and paintings, and the size of the church makes it the tallest and most imposing structure in the city. It has also been featured in hundreds of movies and TV shows. A remarkable edifice and a worth-visit site as it is also the oldest and active Roman Catholic Cathedral in the United States.
