Located on the right bank of the Dnieper River, St. Michael’s Golden-Domed Monastery is one of the biggest functioning monasteries in Ukraine. The monastery is situated on the northeast of the Saint Sophia Cathedral. The site of the monastery overlooks the city’s historical commercial neighbourhood of Podil. Built in the Middle Ages by Sviatopolk II Iziaslavych, the monastery houses within itself the Cathedral of the Refectory of St. John the Divine, which was built in the year 1713. Apart from this, the monastery also is home to the Economic Gates which were constructed in the year1760 and the monastery’s bell tower which was added between the years c. 1716–1719. The original cathedral was demolished by the Soviet authorities in the 1930s but it was then reconstructed and opened in 1999 following the independence of Ukraine in 1991.
