Set on 28 hectares of green, grassy hills, the Lavra is situated above the Dnipro River in Pechersk. It is a place that is flocked by tourists and Orthodox pilgrims alike each year without fail. The one thing that is a sure shot crowd puller is the monastery's cluster of gold-domed churches. They literally are a feast for the eyes! If that wasn't something that would intrigue the crowd, then the underground labyrinths that are lined with mummified monks are absolutely fascinating. For all the pilgrims that visit the country, this also happens to be the holiest place there. The essential meaning of Larva Pecherska is "Senior Monastery of the caves". It was Greek St Antony who founded the lavra in year 1051. It was him along with his follower named Feodosy, who ended up digging a series of catacombs. It was here that they and other reclusive monks ended up worshipping, studying and even living.
