If there is one attraction that we would highly recommend, then it would have to be the Independence Square in Kyiv. A few words to best describe it would be full of life, energy, fun, food, and history, among others. The central square of Kiev is more like the pulse of the capital city. It is very similar in concept to that of Times Square in New York.
The Independence Square or Maidan Nezalezhnosti has been called by many different names, but the most prominent name has simply been Maidan or square. Right from the pro-independence protests in the 1990s to the Euromaidan Revolution in 2013-14, the Maidan has seen it all. Don’t get us wrong, the Maidan has witnessed numerous festivities as well. In fact, tourists and locals often come to the Maidan to enjoy the famous nightly fountain show.
Almost everyone flocks here to enjoy weekend concerts or indulge in delicious street foods. Right from skate rats and snake charmers to souvenir shops, the Maidan offers something for everyone. One side of the Maidan is covered in granite, while the other offers a view of the St. Sophie’s Cathedral, the City Parliament, and the Central mall, among other buildings. There are also two metro stations located close by that offer ease of commuting.
