Another exquisite example of the rich history and culture of Ukraine can be witnessed at the Museum of Folk Architecture and Life. It is situated on 150-hectares of land, and believed to be the largest museum in the country! Wait, did we forget to tell you that it is an open-air museum, under the clear blue sky?
The museum gives one a glimpse into the historical, architectural, and ethnographical regions of Ukraine. It is located to the southwest of Kiev, in the picturesque setting of Pirogovo village. Right at the entrance, one is greeted by windmills and wooden churches that bare the soul of Ukraine’s rich heritage. Among other items are huts that date back to 1587! Visitors are welcome to walk into the huts and view the samples of household items, icons, clothing, etc. A unique aspect of this museum is that it is filled with the old and the new. Meaning, apart from the artifacts, there are also modern craftsmen reviving traditional crafts!
The visitors to the museum are welcome to not only admire rare exhibits but also visit folk craft shops and a traditional restaurant that serves delicious Ukrainian cuisine. It is easy to lose oneself in the beauty and simplicity of the story that the museum weaves. The tale is full of open fields, windmills, huts, shady trails, food, pagan stone idols, and Orthodox churches that have blackened with time! This is one experience that you will reminiscence for years to come.
