The National Opera of Ukraine happens to be the leading musical theatre of the country. It was originally founded in the year 1856 and was then known as the Kiev city center at that time. It was in the year 1919 when it was nationalized and acquired the name of Opera of the Ukrainian Soviet Republic. Then, in the year 1934, it acquired the name Kyiv Theater of Opera and Ballet. The early performances were essentially Russian operas that included plays of the likes of Rusalka by Alexander, Maccabees by Anton Rubinstein and even The Power of the Fiend by A. Serov. Other than this, the opera also hosted many translated European operas that included The Barber of Seville by Rossini, The Marriage of Figaro by Mozart, and the various operas by Giuseppe Verdi, which eventually became quite sought after by all the locals. Then in the very decade of the 20th century, the Opera started bringing in some of the best Ukrainian and Russian singers. These included but were not limited to the likes of P. Tsecevich, M. Medvedev, K. Brun and O. Kamionsky as well. Other than this, there were many performances that the stage hosted which were considered nothing sort of unusual for that time. These included Sadko by Rimsky-Korsakov and Mefistofele by Arrigo Boito and even Die Walkure by Wagner.
